Weekend Shenanigans: Back from the Land of Dim Sum!

I’ve just been recently back from a quick trip to Hong Kong and I’ve three words — awesomely, gloriously tired!

IMG_5676.JPGAround Johnston Rd., Wan Chai

Hong Kong is an ultra fast-paced hyperreal country with a rich past, sumptuous food, and incredible population (I thought Manila has that many people, but no!)

I cannot (dim) sum into words what it felt being there – it is just positively infectious, save for the people walking too close to each other – that I don’t like. But with an efficient train system and strong-willed feet paired with really comfy footwear, you will never run out of places to go to. Up, down, left and right. Go diagonal, get lost. I like being lost in Hong Kong come to think of it, and maybe bump into a stranger that would be my eventual boyfriend. Oh no, wait – that didn’t happen *wink*

IMG_5702.JPGThe majestic view at the Peak

If it weren’t for the language barrier though, I guess it’d be easier. It’s definitely part of the experience – like this one time I was in the nearby 711 wanting to buy stamps but instead ended up staring at the cashier for 20 seconds for the loss of words. How many synonyms and charades for stamp I can conjure before the cashier gets me is beyond my twisted state of mind. I just gave up and walked around to find (love, lol no) another convenience store. When I got my stamp though it felt like victory over adult life, that I could cut across this barrier, and actually got what I want in the end. Like, really. Buying those stamps made me learn a lesson. Who would actually fucking know?

Good thing, picture menus are a thing in this beautiful and glorious wasteland – because if it weren’t then we’ll never know if it’s the mystery meat of the day!

IMG_5650.JPGTian Tan Buddha statue at Lantau Island via Ngong Ping 360 cable car

They said that the East crosses the West this part of the world. It definitely does — trams in the city and this big serene Buddha in the countryside. Nevertheless, I can consider shopping (or selling for that matter) as the national hobby, as shops loom around town everywhere you go. This means that your pocket might actually need to be ready for the cutesy things you’ll find. Or stuff you won’t find at, say, Manila Uniqlo branches – like this jacket I’m wearing right now. I think they were on their way to Manila but stocks were out in Hong Kong already. That’s the only logical reason *wink, again.* But seriously though, amidst eating, shopping, and roaming around town – there is something magical in this seemingly harangued yet very not-giving-a-fuck place called Hong Kong that I can actually picture myself moving in there.

IMG_5592.JPGOne of the third wave coffee shops along Jervois st., Sheung Wan

It’s definitely so fetch! (I just had to.)

Up next: Transit options to Hong Kong – we actually flew via Macau airport! Stay tuned!

Me Time Weekends, also my life according to my phone

IMG_5412

I’ve been really sick lately. So instead of going out, I lounge around at home, recuperating. And truly, I’ve become a Tita in my own right. I’m looking at you, @TitasOfManila.

IMG_5399

And yes, because I was and am still sick, I am trying to eat healthier food. Aka, I make basic muesli and store it in the fridge because it’s so easy to make and I am really tamed to cook. But my muesli is great! Drop by at home sometimes and I’ll make you one. I’m looking at you, Pamhins of Manila!

IMG_5401Pepper chili chicken in citrus mustard dressing sandwich

On times that I cook, I really make it sure that it’s healthy as well. Though my love for really good corned beef hash and (gulp) SPAM, off to the supermarket to buy real meat with no added sodium. Rustan’s has deals on their meat selection so YAYYYYYYY. Says the sucker for supermarket deals. I need coupons to happen in this country.

IMG_5397And make baon [that is a Spam Kewpie Mayo-Mustard sandwich by yours truly] if there are leftovers (don’t mind the spam peeping under the wheat bread, okay?)

IMG_5391

IMG_5393

BUT OH GOD, this big tub of Tillamook sitting in the fridge is not helping to keep me away from eating. Hey you gotta enjoy what you eating, right? Clearly, this post is all about food. Because what better things to do but to eat on weekends???? (I’m getting hungry now meh.)

IMG_5386

On times that I have energy to drag myself outside, I try to jog (loljk sometimes, that is) and head to the Legazpi weekend market because it’s so near my place why not. And afam or cute college/yuppie/hipster kid spotting. Don’t judge, @BekisOfManila 😛

IMG_5388

IMG_5387Jeezus this small brick pizza oven. I want one, okay?

IMG_5389

IMG_5390And I found Shahani/Super Starlet‘s milk. From her boobs, I guess 😛

IMG_5406

On days that I really have the energy to be sociable aka I am not feverish/achy/sleepy/tamad I exert and effort to see friends. Haha, that is in my zombie form, if I really want to. Seriously though, working the night shift is a bit making me @LolasOfManila faster than ageing through smoking. So on weekends I try to see my family and friends as much as possible.

IMG_5404I met my mom, este my sister pala (but we were with our mom as well) to celebrate in advance her passing the LET. I really believe she’ll make it. She’s awesome at what she does but she really does look older than me, no? HAHAHAHA. Also, mental note to self: try to make it a habit to take pictures with people. I am terrible at taking groupies. But I need these pictures to remind me of my human self when I’m in ogre mode.

IMG_5345

I met up with Hanna (with Ella supposedly in the picture) before the big move to Makati over late breakfast, cakes, tea, and rants about the world. My friends deserve an award for tuning me out when I rant. Also (half-)watched Maze Runner with ’em 😛

IMG_5409

My roomie and I love the Bleach store so much. And taking selfies by a big mirror. And making faces. And eating and not exercising. /wrist.

IMG_5411

Speaking of friends that I don’t see that much… I met Cariza and Jonard over a glass of wine and stories of travel, work, and life plans. But we really did talk about Vaginas of Manila, too. We need to make that happen, bbs!

***

I really need to get better so I’m publishing this and heading to sleep. Plus, I need my energy back because this weekend I’m going somewhere… and God knows I’ll need all the energy I can get.

Happy Midweek!!!

Beach weekend!

IMG_5307.JPG

Had finally hit the beach! I mean, I know that it was raining (yet again!) the last weekend but I actually kebs everything and just went. What’s the worst that can happen, get stuck in the middle of the ocean? Haha been there, done that.

IMG_5300.JPG

IMG_5302.JPG

So off I went to a roadtrip with friends and also to go to Amped Up in Crystal Beach Resort! A couple of my friends will play there at night and we have surfing lessons and oh god we’re gonna sleep on tents! Y A A A A A A Y ! And there are US marines in the resort (I do not really know why but there they are.) I am so ready for afam!!!

IMG_5301.JPGReading the Eheads feature on Esquire! Damn so good!

IMG_5305.JPG

IMG_5306.JPG

So basically, I have no photos of what went down there. I ended up wasted and gad the sea was so relaxing so I just had to lounge and watch the beach and listen to the waves with a beer and cig in my hand. But there are pictures from the good guys at Bchbrk Productions c/o Chuckie, my new friend!

IMG_5323.JPG

IMG_5327.JPG

I was not ready to give up my weekend so off I went to Teacher’s Village to see my friend Pat! Long overdue, this drinking date was… and it was my first time in like half a year to be back in the area since I moved out of QC. So much has changed, including this new Tomato Kick location at Malingap street.

IMG_5328.JPG

IMG_5326.JPGBut I don’t approve of this falafel sandwich. No, TK. No 🙁

IMG_5331.JPG

IMG_5332.JPG

LIFE UPDATE: I’d like y’all to meet my new roomie! I moved places again, and now I’ll be living with Nica. So excited for more roomie things, okay?

IMG_5333.JPGI just love this. From Wrong Ramen.

IMG_5324.JPGAlso this, from Twitter.

IMG_5336.JPGGone all grunge barbie. In the office. And yes I still take elevator selfies even if there are other people.

MyDrunkKitchenxJonverWearing a bull cap a la My Harto 😛

And in line with this moving things, I got myself a copy of My Drunk Kitchen by Hannah Hart! I’m looking forward to reviewing this… and trying out Hannah’s crazy recipes… with wine, or beer, or anything that could buzz me up. Also, Youtuber love!!!

Live for the weekend, y’all!

TGIAF! Almost Friday it is!

I kinda took it slow this last weekend and just went out with friends. I was just out from work as usual and I went out to breakfast with Nica and Hannah. Then off drinking with officemates (no, it is not too early.) And that was it! (LOL I am so lacking pictures, but there were interesting happenings last weekend :P)

But I think the highlight of my weekend is the UAAP Cheerdance Competition (CDC)! Every year, it becomes the biggest UAAP event with students from all 8 schools gather to cheer their lungs out for the coveted gold medal. It was this time of the year as well that we used to hold viewing parties back in Maginhawa at Moonleaf Tea Shop. They still do, but I’m not there anymore. Awww I miss those days!

Anyway, Hanna and I (and her mom and dad) huddled up at their place and watched the competition on TV. I’ve only seen the CDC live twice when I was in college and nothing beats that but I am now old (lol, no) and I really have no patience to queue up for tickets so the TV will be fine for us. Anyway, I took it to Twitter to comment on each performance. It was hilarious how people kept on throwing really funny commentaries on each school’s performances. I hope those who are following me had fun tweeting with me, too!

Woooo my alma mater won the championship for group stunts and 4th for the main competition! Congrats, Tamaraws and I bet you can do better next year!

This year’s favorite is UP’s take on EQUALITY. From rainbow flags, pompoms, braided guys to tossing guys (like big boned guys ha) up in the air and putting them up in pyramids, as my friends would say – UP has put the issue on national stage. Pantay pantay!

The famed UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe had their comeback in the Top Three after 3 years. Congrats, Tigers!

Okay, usually I just comment on the top three. BUT them sailor boys, daaaaaamn.

I wanna forget that the lightsaber has been desecrated.

And coming back this year for a back-to-back championship, NU has claimed the crown for another year. Two things though: One – Mohican theme, last nyo na yan ha. I know we’re not in America but in other parts of the globe, wearing Red Indian headgear and face paint is considered offensive. Two – I really really really hope NU students didn’t tear the EQUALITY flag apart as what was being talked about on Twitter.

Anyway, enough of that. I really wanna try to write about my weekend diaries earlier. LOL I wish I have the strength but nevertheless I will try.

This weekend, anyhow, I’ll be joining my friends Kristian, Mersi, and Kim at Crystal Beach Resort as they turn the place upside down with their music —

10608659_749885171724735_2319089900648292554_o 10660713_10204588961788430_1205011853_n

I’m so excited for this weekend – the sand, the sea, (not really thrilled about the sun) the beer, and the boys!

I like writing about my weekends, though. It makes it seem that the week is shorter and the next time we know it's almost Friday.

TGIAF!

Weekend Diary: HL x Uniqlo, Jessica Zafra x Ayala Museum, and Meeting Friends!

I think I’ve pretty much said everytime that I live for the weekends. Basically, it’s when I have time to do things for myself and meet friends and sleep more than I should. I also kind of splurge *gulp* because hey I endure 5 days working in the office and I think everyone deserves a rewarding weekend *wink*

IMG_5260.JPG

So I went around the mall last weekend to find myself a new belt. Now if you need to know something about me… sometimes I really don’t believe in the saying the more, the merrier. I tend to buy stuff one at a time. This means that I can’t justify to myself to buy two things that are essentially alike unless the other is worn out (this applies mainly for clothes, not food haha!) like this pair of Vans sneakers that I really need to replace – which leads me to that I am thrilled that Zalora carries a couple of cool Vans stuff! Time to shop, then eh?

IMG_5259.JPG

I know these are not photos of the belt (wait for me to justify ok, hahaha) but because it is hoodie weather in Manila, and practically all my hoodies are gone (idk really where they’ve been) so I fitted out some stuff over at my favorite brand Uniqlo. And oh god, they really do use the best fabrics. I can literally live inside them… and I might just break that rule of not buying the same shit because I want them all hoodies… in all colors!!!

IMG_5261.JPGWay back in college I used to always wear one

PLUS, I am so excited about their new collaboration with Austrian fashion house, Helmut Lang. Below are some of my favorites from the sneak peek:

helmut-lang-x-uniqlo-fallwinter-2014-collection-01-960x640 helmut-lang-x-uniqlo-fallwinter-2014-collection-03-960x640 helmut-lang-x-uniqlo-fallwinter-2014-collection-07-960x640 helmut-lang-x-uniqlo-fallwinter-2014-collection-09

Then I went to see Jessica Zafra again with friends! This time, her talk was about Game of Thrones, Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Geek Civilization. I really had tons of fun listening to her (well duh I can’t imagine what geek wouldn’t) and we were literally in the middle of legit geeks. I really tend to think that I am not geek enough so I call them legit. Plus, got to tour around Ayala Museum again. We need more museums here in Manila (with free entrance, that is!)

IMG_5262.JPGThe tita that I never had.

She has one more talk on October 4 where she will talk about another thing she likes the most: world domination! If you’re not familiar with Jessica Zafra, this is one topic she just won’t quit on. And there are a lot more interesting lectures happening in Ayala Museum so be sure to check them out!

IMG_5263.JPG

IMG_5264.JPGCollege trio: Jonver, Hanna, Ella

As always, I really love spending weekends with friends. If only I can push myself to be awake for more than 24 hours just to hang out with every one of them. I really miss them a lot! One day, I’ll be able to do that maybe. But until I have a stronger body, I’ll just try to meet them one weekend at a time.

IMG_5266.JPGNica just came back from Paris.

SIDE NOTE: I just joined this Instagram contest by Yardstrick and I really want to win (mainly because they’re giving away cool coffee stuff and coffee workshops so yes I want to win) You may click on the photo to like my post (idk if this counts but I guess it helps?)

IMG_5251.JPG

And I will shamelessly ask you too to follow me on Instagram!!

Three more days til the weekend and I just can’t wait anymore!

Weekend(s) Review!

So y’all know I love weekends. I’ve been busy (and was sick) so I couldn’t post what happened over the past few weekends.

IMG_5102.JPG

IMG_5100.JPG

One of the most memorable weekend of this year (of this life!) is the Saturday that I met Jessica Zafra. She has a series of talks in the Ayala Museum that will run every first Saturday of the month until October. Last August, she talked about why one shouldn’t be a writer. She’s the funniest!

IMG_5101.JPG

IMG_5108.JPG

And the most fun part is when I got a book signed by her!!! Oh god I’m so dorky in that photo I hate myself but oh look at Ms. Zafra!!!

10620111_817292514957996_4666217740683978286_oCatch her this Saturday for the second talk!

IMG_5120.JPG

IMG_5122.JPG

Also, weekends are mostly spent eating. God, I need to think about my weight and my health BUT OH MSG AND DELICIOUS LITTLE THINGS AKA DIMSUM. Two of my officemates and I tried Tim Ho Wan finally! The cheapest Michelin star restaurant was no doubt delicious but I don’t think I’m ready to fall in line for it everytime. How do you like Tim Ho Wan?

IMG_5119.JPG

IMG_5118.JPGWoowee dimsum!

IMG_5159.JPG

IMG_5140.JPG

Also, lately I’ve been needing of some much needed quiet (or the right white noise) so I am now bent into trying cafes like M Cafe! They do a pretty decent Americano save that I have to remind them to minus the sugar. But the place is quiet enough for me to work on things. Plus let me tell you the afams in the are aplenty!!! #Reasons

IMG_5141.JPGTablea cake is good!

IMG_5164.JPG

IMG_5169.JPG

Gad, this now looks like a food post rather a weekend post! Well because most weekends are spent meeting people that I don’t have a chance to see. So when my sister was about to take her board exam (I hope she passes with flying colors!) I took her and mom to Zao for a well-deserved dinner. I love the pho at Zao since they do their meat medium rare and I’m crazy about their fresh rolls!

IMG_5168.JPGPlus, their Viet iced coffee is superb!

IMG_5173.JPGAnd off to Future to meet some other friends on some Saturdays (when my body doesn’t feel so tired)

IMG_5176.JPG

To more weekends!

Weekend Diary: Veg, BSO, and Reads

20140707-205054-75054936.jpgI like chill weekends when no one is rushed and you can just take a walk… and the weather, good; meeting up a friend; having coffee; and driving around town.

20140707-205054-75054085.jpg

20140707-205057-75057352.jpgThe perfect trifecta of my breakfast is coffee, orange juice, and… no not veggies, but — CHEESE! BLEU CHEESE! SACREBLEUUU!

20140707-205056-75056544.jpg

20140707-205058-75058159.jpgEver since I joined the vegetarian program in the office, I now find ways to eat (and enjoy!) more veggies and incorporate it to my diet. It goes like this – since most of the time I eat in the office, I eat more vegetables… but I didn’t give up meat — like WHY WOULD I OKAY

20140707-205055-75055741.jpg

Binondo Chinatown: A Photo Diary

I had free time in my hands so I grabbed Chace the camera and did a little stroll in downtown Manila. I haven’t set foot in the capital for quite a while after I graduated from college. Manila City for me is a chaotic place but it has its charms – and most of it lies in the old nooks. The charm of this urban hyperreality is when it transports you back to its heydays.

DSC_0011I think I have overdosed on old Hong Kong films. Thanks, VSCO hehe.

Binondo is the oldest Chinatown outside the mainland. In this little cramped neighborhood, your senses will be entertained by the sights, smells, and sounds of a bustling neighborhood. Business looks good and every street features a distinct feel of being in another place aside from Manila as we have known it. Honestly, though it could use a more precise urban planning. In the same time, the chaos here seems part of the daily life. Everyone looks so used to it.

What is a trip to Chinatown without dimsum! Everytime I think of Chinatown, all I could ever think is dimsum and tea, dimsum and tea, and repeat! I’ve had a bad case of craving for dimsum for a month now so this is a much-needed part of my trip. I just wished Wai Ying had beancurd rolls then, because in my book it’s the best dimsum!

I spent a rather short time in the area and I walked back to the train station to go back to Makati. I’d love to spend more time in Chinatown though y’know and maybe explore more of Manila. The old city has so much to offer if you let her.

IMG_4903

IMG_4899

Quick note: to get to Binondo, one can simply ride LRT-1 to Carriedo station. Head towards the direction of the old BPI building and you can see Escolta. Walk straight through and turn right at Yuchengco/Nueva street. When you see Ying Ying teahouse – it’s definitely time to slow down for some tea and dimsum… and many more will ensue if you’ll walk some more! From there, you can get to Divisoria, U-belt, or Ermita (for the National Museum and Intramuros!) I have yet to walk some more, though.

Jeez how much longer til the weekend, eh?

Saturdays: Football and Social Media for Social Good

10286756_870139136334151_5548642246018796537_o

I have my weekend pretty free and (even if still at work) I’m thinking what to do or where to go this lovely Saturday morning. Good thing, there’s the Adobo Cup where some of my friends from some agencies (Hello Patty [and Dom and Clarence but are in HK!]) and Globe will play! They’re prolly at the field now at the Gatorade – Chelsea FC Blue Pitch in Circuit Makati to stretch and get their game on already (and me still typing away and talking to clients. Meh.) I can’t get enough of World Cup 2014, so this is a pretty good fuel to the fire!

_GL30000 (751)

Football has gained traction in the country over the years and it’s good ’cause it’s helping communities as well — think of it like basketball in the 90’s. “We want to capitalize on the sport of football as an intervention tool for children in underserved communities. Sports is a way to develop the children’s well-being and may also open doors for them to a better life,” said Fernando Esguerra, Globe OIC for Corporate Social Responsibility. Globe invests on these communities by means of football, as spearheaded by Azkals Team Captain and Globe Ambassador Chieffy Caligdong.

Now only if I have been sporty myself. I just fancy watching so might as well support it!

P.S. I don’t get basketball and boxing though. Can we focus on football instead? HAHA!

Poster_SMDay_683x1024

Then there’s the Social Media Day happening in the afternoon! Where we are celebrating the Best of Online Media #boomPH! For the past three years (four if we count in Twestival as a prototype!) we have been celebrating social media in the country and this year, we will come together and be ONE community of online communities! It’s overwhelming how there are a LOT of online communities for such a small country! We are a social media capital after all – we’re kinda known for that!

You’ll be amazed how many are going to this event: IGers Manila, Tumblr Philippines, Mozilla Philippines, Windows Phone Users, Google Business Groups (GBG), Google Student Assistants (GSA), Google Education Group (GEG), Google Developers Group (GDG), Hootsuite Ambassadors, Soundcloud Philippines, istorya.net, iVolunteer.ph, Tradeschool Manila, Philippine Web Designers Organization, Filipino Freethinkers, Change.org PH, Youth Act Now and labor advocacy group EILER Inc.

Thanks to the sponsors as well, for helping make this happen: SM Cares, SM Supermalls, Globe Telecom, BPI, Asia Brewery, Nestle, ATI, Solid Mac, Picture City, Smart, Google, Hootsuite, Beyond the Box, ThoughtBuzz, Team Manila, Oishi, Echostore, Commune, Bayani Brew, Puto Flan, Burger Company, Croque, Bronuts, Moon Leaf, Philippine Coffee Board, Binalot.
