Spring Cleaning x Updates

I’m really back… please believe me, lol.

(Did you notice the new blog design? Hehe!)

It’s been a while since I sent out that my hiatus is over, but I really haven’t posted anything after that, have I? I’m still trying to get into the grove, but like what Charlie said, “I’m [also] busy trying to participate.”

img_9204

Loving what I do (at work) and loving the people I work with gave me the best opportunity to participate. I’ve just turned one year in my job (I haven’t been telling everyone because I’m tryna escape the libre haha) and so far it has been good. I’ve even made quite a few friends! Everyone’s been so crazy!

img_9162

Our office is an insane hodgepodge and that’s what makes it really special. We don’t have fancy game rooms or out-of-this-world sleep booths (though we won’t complain if there is!) but all the hard work (sometimes) seem a little easier to bear with these crazies around.

img_9139

And I am so proud that I still have a social life! There aren’t much people that I call friends, but I’m glad I can find time to hang out with them. If it’s not game night or wine night or both, we’ll prolly meet up just to sit and do whatever. Two weeks ago, we’ve been to Baguio – and it was cool and rainy there. I loved the rain – it gave the place so much depth than it already has.

img_9061

I even get to see people I haven’t met for a while. Downing a shot of tequila or two and trying to remember good ol’ days. But we don’t need to miss each other, as well.

img_9016

And jeez, I can’t believe I’m telling you this – I’m trying to be fit. Could you believe that?

img_9154

This past year (I think it has been a year since I wrote something decent here, yes) was a rollercoaster, a whirlwind. I’ll have it no other way. But I miss sharing these things to you –

img_8995

I wish I have more time to talk to you! I’ll make time – I’ll try.

(Expect more posts in the coming days, that’s for sure!)

Life according to the phone, pt.6

The city looks pretty! I can see the ONE Festival aftermath (oh god, it was a beautiful aftermath, I tell you!)

This one’s from FAILE. And the one below is from Kristin Farr —

THE NORTH REMEMBERS: I will always have a soft spot for Quezon City. So I went up to the north, at Maginhawa, to see Loreen, Kristian, and Thysz for something for Buzzfeed. You have to wait for it, of course hihihi.

Last weekend, I decided to go to Chessika’s first blog anniversary AND IT WAS HILARIOUS! I have known Chessika through a friend and we’ve been friends online BUT we have never seen each other until last week – and the girl is gayer than I’ve ever thought! Congrats for the first year, Chessika, and many more to come!

We played games – so we can tell people it’s fun – and Chessika coerced me asked me nicely let me be the gamemaster. AND BOY THE GAMES INCLUDED CHEERDANCES. Hahahaha, it was really fun. I had fun, like tons of it!

We had to retake the photo because her tarp self is not seen!!! Oh, Chessika!!!

And the night cannot get any gayer! Went to Eastwood to see the best friend and watch San Andreas – god it has a gorgeous cast!

It’s really rare that I am awake in the after hours of Saturdays, so I went back to Future to meet some more friends. Huhuhu, I really miss the mornings and the change is coming – I’ll tell y’all about it SOON!

The weekend is not complete too if I don’t see Nica! Spent the whole Sunday with her~

Huhuhu I also have to take that moment to acknowledge Cersei on the latest episode of Game of Thrones. JEEZ SHE REALLY HAD TO THAT????? Tommen you fool get up and take care of your momma! #maternal #estrogen

And before the week starts, I needed a good recovery with lots of green sriracha.

Huhu, can it be like 4 days weekend and not just 2?

Life according to my phone, pt. 5 // Also, Friday’s 10 Happy Things

It’s almost the weekend again, and my weeks has been pretty busy! Changes are coming, and I have no idea if it’ll be good or not, but one thing I am now – I am sooooo excited! Weekends are either spent working or meeting friends. Gotta love the rush!

I’ve never been to the Mind Museum, but last week I saw it, and I never imagined it’ll look like this inside. I know it’s for kids, but it’s pretty decent for a science museum here in Manila. ALSO, looooove the museum shop. I pretended I don’t have my card with me because Vader is really looking at me. Nope, not now. Gotta save!

Anyway, I was there for the media briefing of the ONE Festival, happening right now at The Fort. Jeez, some of the murals I’ve seen myself (i.e. the one just right in front of our office) are uh-mazing!

Catching up with friends has been a pleasure for me. Actually, no. It’s kind of a luxury… I have been working at night (until June 10) and it’s really difficult to balance human energy for a schedule like that. Then again, sometimes I push myself just to see ’em. I miss mornings!

Also, I’ve been working with Startuptravels to build the community here in Manila. I met one of the owners of this^ beautiful space that looks like it’s pulled right out of Brooklyn. That’s O2 Space and I can’t wait to tell you more about what we’re doing with ’em. Stay tuned for that!

Also, because I spent most time these days indoors, I’ve been at it again. I mean, playing games on my phone! Monument Valley was on sale, and I even bought the installment! God, it was so beautifully designed – you have to play it yourself if you wanna know how glorious it is!

ALSO, I got this from Helga – I think it’s a bit of a conscious effort to think of things that you’re happy about so you can keep happy whatever you’re doing. So there, here are my 10 Happy Things this Friday:

  1. Vader things. I looked at my Darth Vader decal at work, and I think it’s lonely. Looking at the internet (and the Mind Museum) for more Vader stuff!
  2. Free space on the phone. Since I finished Monument Valley, I can download more games yay. Mornings are lonely, okay?
  3. KL on July! I just got news that I got in on a conference in Malaysia. It’s not sure though that I can make it but I do hope I can.
  4. The big burger steak. I need to stop eating fast food, but today, that mammoth of a burger was keeping me happy.
  5. Startuptravels things. We have lots of plans for the local community, and I can’t wait to tell y’all about it. OF COURSE, you (yes, you my dearest reader) will get dibs about it. Join here, though!
  6. Cold Brew Coffee from Local Edition. God knows I can’t think about anything but coffee on weekends.
  7. The ONE Festival murals at The Fort. Srsly, this city is prettier with those painted walls!
  8. Baguio on June 10. It’s a bit late because it is starting to rain, but wth a roadtrip is a roadtrip (and I could really use a vacation!)
  9. Chessika’s Blog anniversary. My NFF Chessika is celebrating her first blog anniversary and god she’s the one of the gayest woman I know – and I can’t wait to see her!
  10. Grey’s Anatomy season finale and Giacommo GianniottiGIACOMMO IS HOT!!!! And also despite losing McDreamy, the last episode progressed from heavy to tearjerkingly light.

Whew, 28 more weekends left!

Weekend + @MUNI_PH Meetup this Wednesday!!!

My weekends are better spent on coffee, meetings over coffee, and... you guessed right -- more coffee!

IMG_6932IMG_6933

If you’ve been playing SimCity BuildIt, you’ll get me on this. Who has Dr. Vu’s Lab already?IMG_6936

Luna Specialty Coffee is a lil hole smack right in NAC Tower along 32nd street in The Fort. I know you guys call it BGC nowadays but I’m really not feeling calling it that. So I’ll stick to Fort. There aren’t that much options in the menu, but it works. I love that the cold brew comes in a bottle (that might as well look like cough syrup. Cue: Young The Giant.) The Corned Beef Tapa was just alright too! I’d love it to be hash-y than tapa-y, but hey I just woke up at 2pm and I need nourishment. IMG_6934IMG_6935IMG_6937 IMG_6939I’ve been doing some freelance work with MUNI and we have a lot of great events coming up for ‘ya! I’ve pitched a few of my favorite things – and one is below – and another one is above! Sooooo excited to work with them and bring you meaningful events to connect with like-minded people. /plug —

QUICK PLUG! This Wednesday, we’re having three nomads tell their stories of travel and truth – Hannah Reyes of www.hannah.ph and Nat Geo Creatives, April Cuenca of  FlipTrip.ph, and Guido Sarreal of Kawil Tours. Hope you can drop by and hang with us as we talk about our favorite hobby, that is in this blog, T R A V E L I N G! Register here – I think there are still Eager Beaver tickets available (PhP 150), PhP 200 for walk-ins.

/endplug

IMG_6940IMG_6942

We have time to spare after our catch up, so the MUNI team headed towards the Satchmi Vinyl Day festivities at the BGC amphiteather – and boy was it fun! Got to hear Jensen and Tandem before heading on to our agenda for the night.

IMG_6946IMG_6948

But quick falafel run is always good, okIMG_6949

Our venue partner for the Travel and Truth meetup on Wednesday is Z Hostel at Don Pedro street in Makati! If you’ve been following my blog since I started traveling, you’d know I have a soft spot for hostels – and for cozy, good vibes-inducing ones at that. Right from the doorstep, Z will put an end to your hostility towards the common hostel, because it gives you good vibes. The roofdeck will be our rendezvous, and I am so ready to hear our nomad guests to tell their stories. Will I see you there?  IMG_6950IMG_6951Pun or not pun intended idk idk idkIMG_6956IMG_6957

Unwinding after a long day at Today x Future is always a good idea. It’s one of those places that I can call home and just go to and not feel alone. A lot has changed since I met Future but it still is that place where I go to randomly meet friends without ever texting or calling or vibering or tweeting anyone. Sucha good feels kinda place <3
IMG_6959It pains me to go home when I’ve gots lotsa things still to do but it’s all in a day’s work.

Weekends (and hangovers) aka life according to the phone, pt. 3

Izz a bit late but what the hell - this is covering end of Feb to March

IMG_6303First order of things tho – selfie!

HannaHanna1Hanna2

Last month, my best friend Hanna and I celebrated our birthdays! Cheers to 26 and 24 — with a big ass beer and more spirits…Hanna3Hanna4Hanna5Hanna6Like this tall shots of Patron XO!

Hanna7Hanna8IMG_6255

What’s a decent hangover without pancit canton? Tell me?! And of course, I just had to have time with the fambam as well – though it’s really getting hard to have all of us in one table these days, this’ll do for now. I hope I can rile them up for a summer getaway or something. IMG_6304IMG_6315Mendokoro Ramenba 1Mendokoro Ramenba 2

But even without hangover, I’ll choose noodles anytime any day anywhere. I finally went to Mendokoro Ramenba in Salcedo Village. I’ve been tweeting and telling you guys that I’ve heard so much good about this place – and yes those are all true! No frills ramen with a small menu of less than 10 items and just one of the most glorious broth I have souped up. Gad, even in the middle of this hotness aka the devil’s asshole, I would go up there to soup up.
Mendokoro Ramenba 4Mendokoro Ramenba 5Mendokoro Ramenba 6

And for those busy days (yes, even the weekends are busy ok), I go to local coffee shops like Local Edition to work on stuff. March has been incredibly busy with both meeting potential collaborators and meeting friends. Local Ed’s cold brew is just right to wire me up and put me in the mood to work plus Perea is a quiet haven – aka without the mall crowd – to hole up and focus on things.

Sundays at Local Edition 2

I just looooove how last month turned out and it’s just the first quarter.Sundays at Local Edition

2015, c’mon show me what you’ve got!

#Lokal Tweetup at Commune

Before February ended, a newfound friend (NFF) and I decided to gather some more friends to talk about local stuff. My NFF Uli is from San Francisco and is experiencing Manila for the first time. So what better to do but gather some friends and welcome him to the crazy city of Manila!

#LOKAL PosterIMG_6251IMG_6254IMG_6258IMG_6291IMG_6292IMG_6293IMG_6294IMG_6296Yay for cupcakes by Sweet Patti Cakes!

IMG_6300From L-R: Zel (HVMO), Jason (UP Diliman), Wanna (Muni), Tina (Globe), Saul (BPI), Jed (Scout Magazine), Paolo (Team Manila), Uli (San Fo), Cai (Freelance and overall awesome person), Stephen (Nipa Foods), Danella (HomegrownFull Suite), Ros (CommuneTweetup MNL), Michelle (Nipa Foods), and Kevin (Signet, Bespoke Man). (We’re missing Nica here, though she helped me organize this.)

Thanks for coming, everyone! See you all online 🙂

Weekends – hellos, see-you-laters, and goodbyes

Whew! Finally got time to write here... I am starting to lose my mind over everything that needs to be done. And this blog is on that same list.

IMG_6213.JPGI’d really rather not discuss this one

IMG_6212-0.JPG

Let us start with goodbyes though. So the previous week has seen meltdowns and bouts of anxiety attacks over a lot of things. Change is good, I guess, but my body couldn’t keep up. With change, goodbyes are in tow and it’s never easy letting go no matter how beautifully Elsa sings about it. For one, leaving my best friend and where we lived for four good months wasn’t easy. The place was so peaceful and beautiful and convenient – and not to mention there were a lot of cute boys in the area. Haha! But it wasn’t the plan to stay there for long right from the start. I knew that we had to leave one way or another. It might be shallow for other people, but I find it difficult to leave the place even even though I now live in a more convenient distance from work.
IMG_6200.JPGlol quick selfie break

IMG_6209.JPG IMG_6208.JPG

Meltdowns and anxieties = I need ramen in my life. I was craving ramen for the past few weeks just because I was so stressed about moving and nigh shift and expenses and boys (please refer to the photo way above, haha) I dragged friends over to Ramen places in the metro. The nearest we can get is Ramen Nagi in Greenbelt. I can swear by their Butao Ramen that it’s one of the best I’ve tried. I know, I know, Ramen seems faddish but what a stressed boy got to do when all he wants is soup?
IMG_6207.JPGIMG_6216.JPGIMG_6215-0.JPG

One visit ain’t enough – I had to bring Nica here as well. I tried the Akaoo Ramen instead and god my mouth was on fire, sure it was! Ramen Nagi has branches all over the metro, so I sure won’t miss it though.

IMG_6210-0.JPG IMG_6218.JPGMilky and Sunny has already opened at Legaspi Village!

IMG_6219.JPGIMG_6204.JPG

Local Edition has a special place in my heart. It’s one of the places I’ll miss going to frequently. Especially, when I used to spend weekends there with a special someone… who’s no longer special. It was good while it lasted though… Gah. I don’t wanna talk about this. Dating is hard, okay? #hugot | Cue: So no one told you life was gonna be this waaaaaayIMG_6224.JPG IMG_6225-0.JPG IMG_6226.JPGIMG_6228.JPG

I spent the last day before I move out with friends from Muni! It was so nice to have spent it with people I don’t usually see – people who most probably I will still not see that often. We met up at Commune with a bunch of other Muni people, had dinner at Project Pie, and holed up for drinks and games at Karl’s place. Ah, such is life. If only I could see friends more often. There sure was a lot of see-you-laters that night…IMG_6229-0.JPG

Say hello to my new place! I moved stuff from Nica’s place to my new place yesterday yet I still haven’t unpacked and my things are just all over the place. I hope I can muster the strength to do so this week because I don’t want the filth to pile up. I still can’t believe I’m out of my happy place though. I need my adjustment period!!! Then again, it feels like a restart at some point – a chance to start over and leave regrets and pain behind. I hear ya, Sam Smith! I do hope decorating this space will cheer things up a bit. I’ll keep you posted on that!

IMG_6230.JPGIMG_6211.JPGI could really use a milkshake right now. (Photo: Friday’s Double Chocolate Milkshake)

Flying away… yet again.

DSC_0300From last year’s trip

By the time this reaches your screens, I’ll be in the airport, hovering towards the boarding gate because I’ve probably just arrived from work to catch a plane to the chaotic yet charming Venice-esque city of smiles. I’m with two friends who I’ll be traveling with for the first time and I have never been excited to be back in a city I’ve been before. The last time I was there, I was a bit tired from the Angkor Wat tours and I can admit that I haven’t done so much. Heck, I missed on having a bowl of authentic Tom Yum Goong served in the streets!! But I’m glad I did the temples then, because now I have time for other things like exploring the other districts like Pratunam and Ratchethewi and Khao San, and maybe take cooking classes, and Thai massage (perhaps with a happy ending… hehe) and so much moooooooore!

I was just on a trip last month, and even though this trip might really leave me broke and eating free food from the office pantry for the rest of the year, I wouldn’t care… (maybe not the wisest decision, but I’m so up for spontaneity right now)

Yes, I’ll be in this flight and will have a good time.

I promise to save up after though because plans for 2015 is slowly upcoming. PRETTY. AWESOME. SURPRISES. But scared as well…

Also, I’ll take this opportunity to congratulate my friend, Ella, who was with me last year in the same city. It was also my first time to go to more than one country and it was awesome and was a great year-ender for me. She’s now based in London and I got nothing but all the happiness in the world for her. Kudos to you, Ella, and keep calm and carry on! (I just had to.)

I’ll see you guys, soon! And with more stories to share 🙂

Me Time Weekends, also my life according to my phone

IMG_5412

I’ve been really sick lately. So instead of going out, I lounge around at home, recuperating. And truly, I’ve become a Tita in my own right. I’m looking at you, @TitasOfManila.

IMG_5399

And yes, because I was and am still sick, I am trying to eat healthier food. Aka, I make basic muesli and store it in the fridge because it’s so easy to make and I am really tamed to cook. But my muesli is great! Drop by at home sometimes and I’ll make you one. I’m looking at you, Pamhins of Manila!

IMG_5401Pepper chili chicken in citrus mustard dressing sandwich

On times that I cook, I really make it sure that it’s healthy as well. Though my love for really good corned beef hash and (gulp) SPAM, off to the supermarket to buy real meat with no added sodium. Rustan’s has deals on their meat selection so YAYYYYYYY. Says the sucker for supermarket deals. I need coupons to happen in this country.

IMG_5397And make baon [that is a Spam Kewpie Mayo-Mustard sandwich by yours truly] if there are leftovers (don’t mind the spam peeping under the wheat bread, okay?)

IMG_5391

IMG_5393

BUT OH GOD, this big tub of Tillamook sitting in the fridge is not helping to keep me away from eating. Hey you gotta enjoy what you eating, right? Clearly, this post is all about food. Because what better things to do but to eat on weekends???? (I’m getting hungry now meh.)

IMG_5386

On times that I have energy to drag myself outside, I try to jog (loljk sometimes, that is) and head to the Legazpi weekend market because it’s so near my place why not. And afam or cute college/yuppie/hipster kid spotting. Don’t judge, @BekisOfManila 😛

IMG_5388

IMG_5387Jeezus this small brick pizza oven. I want one, okay?

IMG_5389

IMG_5390And I found Shahani/Super Starlet‘s milk. From her boobs, I guess 😛

IMG_5406

On days that I really have the energy to be sociable aka I am not feverish/achy/sleepy/tamad I exert and effort to see friends. Haha, that is in my zombie form, if I really want to. Seriously though, working the night shift is a bit making me @LolasOfManila faster than ageing through smoking. So on weekends I try to see my family and friends as much as possible.

IMG_5404I met my mom, este my sister pala (but we were with our mom as well) to celebrate in advance her passing the LET. I really believe she’ll make it. She’s awesome at what she does but she really does look older than me, no? HAHAHAHA. Also, mental note to self: try to make it a habit to take pictures with people. I am terrible at taking groupies. But I need these pictures to remind me of my human self when I’m in ogre mode.

IMG_5345

I met up with Hanna (with Ella supposedly in the picture) before the big move to Makati over late breakfast, cakes, tea, and rants about the world. My friends deserve an award for tuning me out when I rant. Also (half-)watched Maze Runner with ’em 😛

IMG_5409

My roomie and I love the Bleach store so much. And taking selfies by a big mirror. And making faces. And eating and not exercising. /wrist.

IMG_5411

Speaking of friends that I don’t see that much… I met Cariza and Jonard over a glass of wine and stories of travel, work, and life plans. But we really did talk about Vaginas of Manila, too. We need to make that happen, bbs!

***

I really need to get better so I’m publishing this and heading to sleep. Plus, I need my energy back because this weekend I’m going somewhere… and God knows I’ll need all the energy I can get.

Happy Midweek!!!
J
